The game takes place in 1941. The game is played by Elspeth "Doc" Holliday, an employee of the "Spookhouse" organization, which studies paranormal phenomena. Holliday is sent by her superiors to the town of Burkittsville in Maryland to investigate the crimes committed by a local hermit, Rustin Parr.
The action takes place during the American Civil War. The game is played as a lieutenant of the Union Army. Seriously wounded, he is found in the woods near Burkittsville (Maryland) by a girl Robin Weaver, and taken to the farm of her grandmother Bess Weaver.
Having regained consciousness, the lieutenant realizes that he does not remember his name or what happened to him in the woods.
The game's protagonist is Jonathan Prye, a former priest who left the clergy during a crisis of faith. Now, Prye, a witch hunter, goes to the settlement of Blair to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a girl named Elly Kedward, who went missing several weeks earlier.
